Don’t Trust That Memory 2012

     Don’t Trust That Memory

Do not trust that memory.

It adds or steals; misrepresents;

Takes reels of film

That never happened

And coagulates them.  Stuck in time

You’re either older or you’re younger

Or it never happened.

Did you make love in the hall

When you were fourteen?

Fall into that well

When you were two,

Hanging by small fingers

‘Til a neighbor pulled you up?

Endless scenes

You do not screen or question.

After all, they’re pictures burned

Onto a brain you trust,

The story growing mollusk crust.

If I were you, I wouldn’t live

On movie clips and photographic negatives

You’re positive about.

Does that smash your boat and crush your melon?

Push a disinfected you

Into

         the moment!

Manipulated every day by reminiscence,

We scandalously play with memory.

Just don’t take it seriously.

Listening To Andre Previn 1950 Something 2012

Listening To Andre Previn 1950 Something

What are we doing more

Than looking for ourselves?

Borrowing our styles,

Noticing the indecisive

Movement when we write,

(an O that should go rightwards

which we suddenly write leftwards).

We oppose ourselves; impugn, negate;

We contra-go, we contra-play,

We question-learn

All in the quest for unity.

What is a question but a search?

Consistency we recognize as ‘me’

To live with and enjoy.

We keep on borrowing and using,

Sometimes jumping off

[The instrument, the job]

to head where we belong.

We’ve seen…  We’ve had enough.

The clues? The warning?

Discontent;

A looking-in;

A know-not-why;

A ‘that’s not me!’

What are we doing more

Than looking for

Ourselves,

For there sits our

Serenity.

Not Goal But Mechanism: Gratitude

Not Goal But Mechanism

Gratitude:

Imagining in image,

Image in imaginings;

Not goal but mechanism;

Working tool to get you there,

Where thinking clearer betters life

And life for those around.  Undervalued

As a talent, knack and aptitude,

When you get it, feel it, use it!

Not a goal but mechanism.

On Those Who Borrow 2011

          On Those Who Borrow

Can you think through the chinks,

Through the links of the chains

When you borrow but know about

                             somewhere inside?

Paying back, want making want,

Wish and needs

Derived from imaginings,

Wanton deficiencies,

Lured by the promise

That lurks in a luscious and lustrous glow,

To lurch, lunge and go

Toward a cost

And a loss,

Well, of course you can -

                             somewhere inside.

A Work In Progress 2011

A Work In Progress

Art is that,

Poetry, piano jazz:

All works in progress.

Friends of mine know that.

I’ve never written, played a piece

I’ve not revised – at least

Each time I’ve sized it up,

Done it twice or thrice or

More, more, more….

An awkward phrase

Needs tempo, elongating, shortening,

Abbreviating – simply wrong.

I once thought, is any artwork finished… ever?’

I still think it never is.

Life perhaps?

Never finished… I would

Like to think it is.

Work-in-progress, always

Where one dares, inspired

By a change

In mind inspired by one better.

Breathing in, metabolizing

Something better

As the letter becomes yours.

Brasher in a quiet way: maybe later in the day,

Observant and articulate,

Alert to nuance new.

Always on the way…

To rainbow’s end, maybe no end,

Restrictions ever loosening,

Never ending progress

That keeps saying “No, not this,

You silly-billy.”

Not advancement but evolvement.

Only To Be Found Within 2011

Only To Be Found Within

That’s where it is,

It’s nowhere else.

Simplicity itself:

Intelligence and intuition:

Vision

Seeing oneness everywhere,

In every form.

Beauty everywhere,

In forms others might

Deem ugly,

Wealth where others might see poverty.

 Not having love, but being love.

Evolution that was first and real,

The journey inexhaustible.

Found in and by

The mind perceptive;

Stage by stage,

Phase by phase:

Never all at once.

Thought You Get But Once 2011

Thoughts You Get But Once

There are thoughts you only get but once:

The back side of the front side of creativeness.

Oh yes, the theme comes back -

Perhaps a thousand times-

But never as it was that moment.

Moment of panache,

Moment of genius;

Inspired, unique,

That special muse

Twin Siamese.

So get it down.

Drop what you’re doing:

Yoga pose, the floured board.

Just wash your hands

And do it.

In The Nowness of Seconds 2011

Within The Nowness Of Seconds

Within the nowness of seconds

- If you live within them -

There is wisdom,

And in wisdom safety,

 Sanctuary, guarantee:

Security.

In the newness of the nowness

Is the yes-ness of the nano-

In the smallest unit

No-ness which,

Does not exist.

Niceness

In entirety.

Ooh, it’s lovely to exist!

Blocks 2011

Blocks

The blockages are fears,

The blocks for building.

We interpret, look for symbols

(all of which are true and valid)

Yet we’re leaving out

The fears; the archetype’s

Recurring prototype;

The real walls,

The real fences

Real lenses

to it all.
