What Was Once
What was once can never be.
Resemblance, yes.
But not exactly.
What was once you do not want
Again. You do not
Want what’s spent.
It makes good sense.
The point is that the you that was,
The them that was,
The it that was
Was right for then.
The you, the them, the it
That was would never suit
The you that is,
And if you’re honest
Wise and rounded,
You that is, is bound for something
That is better yet.
You bet!

Self-going I,
All that I have to do is fuel you up
Now and again,
Move ‘round a bit,
Put you to bed at night
And let
You think, thank God
For good ideas and food that fills,
And verse
From phrases fragmentary;
Crazy news of crazed events
That break…
A fully automized un-automated I and me;
A miracle,
For heaven’s sake.

The Most Natural One of Us (In The House)
The most natural one of us
In the house
Is Albert Cat.
When lengthened days of May
Manipulate his melatonic ways
And night sings
“Come to me my melatonic baby”,
He succumbs,
Coming through his door
At four,
(that’s right, that’s 4a.m. at night)
For Cat’s Delite,
At which a.m.
He joins Ms Corwin in
The bed.
No
Get-up-go-
to-work ethos,
No
Three-meals-cut-out-mouse-
snacks club,
No member of the ‘idle hands
Make-devil’s-work society,
He follows days circadiant,
His nature conflict-free. At ease.
He spends no years in therapy
Spending his money or monies.
Nah, the most nah-tural of us
In this or any house
Is he.

Don’t Trust That Memory 2012

Don’t Trust That Memory
Do not trust that memory.
It adds or steals; misrepresents;
Takes reels of film
That never happened
And coagulates them. Stuck in time
You’re either older or you’re younger
Or it never happened.
Did you make love in the hall
When you were fourteen?
Fall into that well
When you were two,
Hanging by small fingers
‘Til a neighbor pulled you up?
Endless scenes
You do not screen or question.
After all, they’re pictures burned
Onto a brain you trust,
The story growing mollusk crust.
If I were you, I wouldn’t live
On movie clips and photographic negatives
You’re positive about.
Does that smash your boat and crush your melon?
Push a disinfected you
Into
the moment!
Manipulated every day by reminiscence,
We scandalously play with memory.
Just don’t take it seriously.

Listening To Andre Previn 1950 Something
What are we doing more
Than looking for ourselves?
Borrowing our styles,
Noticing the indecisive
Movement when we write,
(an O that should go rightwards
which we suddenly write leftwards).
We oppose ourselves; impugn, negate;
We contra-go, we contra-play,
We question-learn
All in the quest for unity.
What is a question but a search?
Consistency we recognize as ‘me’
To live with and enjoy.
We keep on borrowing and using,
Sometimes jumping off
[The instrument, the job]
to head where we belong.
We’ve seen… We’ve had enough.
The clues? The warning?
Discontent;
A looking-in;
A know-not-why;
A ‘that’s not me!’
What are we doing more
Than looking for
Ourselves,
For there sits our
Serenity.

Ideas Ubiquitous
Why should artists,
Makers and initiators,
All originators -
Lose the drive in dryness
When Ideas are everywhere -
To take and use,
Make to your own.
(Though
No idea ever is ever own-ed)
To
Twist, turn, angle,
In a world
Of focuslessness,
Ideas global?
Don’t
Get bored,
Be unaware:
Instead,
Take in, endure.
Ideas exist for
You.

Controlling Time
You do change, and
It is a stranger and surprise.
Eye shape, vagina too.
(I do not know what penises do).
Lips up and down too thin, askew;
Creeping, drooping going on while sleeping.
Up, down, in, out, crepey
face
(and other parts) have had their use.
With not a chance to brace yourself,
You wake and wrink-
le
There between the brows,
Outside and under eyes;
Lids, brows, sight victimized,
Lost in lies of chronologic- truth,
Wide-eyed and starry-eyes of youth concluded.
Connecting time, correcting time, controlling time -
Impossible, ridiculous!
Perhaps collecting time from birth,
Self-going apparatus,
Mind its own,
Is all we ever do.

Once More From The Bath
Thank you God, for the computer. -
It gives room for privacy
To listen inside/out of me
And get it down,
Not forced to see a soul
(except my own).
Thank you for a bathtub,
Callous softening in peace -
A place
Where I can lift a leg
Behind my head
And not succeed. (I never do).
But with no hundreds to behold me
I can keep on trying,
Lying there. Thank you.
Giant, tiny oxymoronic gifts are mine
While barren, impecunious, impoverished
Of every age define their lives and are defined
By piles of garbage – soggy, squelchy;
Luckless, hapless, poor
On other levels too
While I’ve got bath, computer,
Endless water;
Lucky, favored.
Thank you.

Fault Line Metaphor
Fracture in the crust.
Not a mistake, not error;
Nature’s crack attended by
Displacement on one side
Proportional to t’other.
Perfect.
Never error – just effect
That goes for all and everything
And all the time,
Not matter how it seems.
Rewards we’re not inclined to thank.
It’s how it’s seen,
